In its 11th consecutive year, the LATINA Style Corporate Executive of the Year program honors influential Latinas, selected by their peers, as leaders and examples for the Hispanic community and for the professional women in the U.S. Each year LATINA Style Inc. recognizes the achievement and dedication Latinas are performing at the top of their respective companies and in various industries. The Top 10 Corporate LATINA Executives of the Year listed here (in no specific order) have demonstrated excellence in leadership, commitment to the community, impact to the company bottom line and creation of an environment where associates are encouraged to succeed and reach their full potential.

Evita Garces, Managing Director Technical Operations, Maintenance Ops Control

American Airlines

On November 13, Evita “Evie” Garces, Managing Director of Maintenance Operations Control at American Airlines was named the company’s new FAA-certificated Director of Maintenance (DOM). As the first woman and the first Latina team member to occupy this position, American is making history as it upholds its commitment to diversity. As the new DOM, Garces is responsible for ensuring that all work on the airline’s aircraft is performed in accordance with Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs); staying up to date on, and maintaining access to, all FARs; and serving as the primary maintenance liaison between the FAA and American. She and her team also oversee the day-to-day technical operations of American, which includes oversight of aircraft maintenance, vendor operations in more than 150 cities, ownership of the aircraft maintenance deferral process, and the management of out-of-service aircraft. Garces has a rich history in technical operations that dates back to high school, where she graduated from Aviation High School in New York City with Airframe and Power Plant licenses. She continued to expand her aviation knowledge at the College of Aeronautics in Flushing, NY and obtained her MBA from Northwestern University in Chicago. Honing her skills in various positions, she found her way to American Airlines in 2001. She started her career on the aircraft maintenance track, earning her Airframe and Power plant (A&P) license to eventually become an Aviation Maintenance Technician. She has continued to work her way up within the company, serving in various positions, including Manager of Aircraft Maintenance and Managing Director of Line Maintenance. Before her current position, she served as the Managing Director of Maintenance Planning — Base and Strategic. It was in this position that she led the efforts around Base Maintenance operations, including the launch of several successful initiatives such as domestic satellite Wi-Fi modifications and aircraft cabin retrofits.

 


Lupita Sanchez Cornejo, Regional Director of External Affairs, AT&T

As Regional Director of External Affairs for AT&T, Lupita Sanchez Cornejo oversees legislative and community affairs for the Greater Los Angeles region. She is also the executive lead for Believe Los Angeles, part of AT&T Believes, the company’s national initiative for lifting communities. In L.A., AT&T pairs resources with local organizations to address both youth unemployment and the need to diversify the entertainment industry. The L.A. Believe program supports workforce development and career readiness programs, with a special emphasis on digital media and entertainment employment opportunities for underserved students, especially diverse millennials. She is also responsible for executing local strategies that help achieve corporate legislative objectives, and managing community partnerships with non-profit organizations, philanthropic and corporate social responsibility and local communities. She leads a team that works with policymakers across the Los Angeles region on AT&T’s new technology deployment and infrastructure investment. For nearly two decades, she has been a valuable part of the AT&T family where she advances AT&T’s public policy and philanthropic initiatives through a variety of leadership positions with community and business organizations. Prior to joining AT&T, she was a senior legislative strategist on L.A. Mayor Richard Riordan’s executive team, serving as Assistant Deputy Mayor for Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs. In her role as Assistant Deputy Mayor, she was responsible for oversight of the Mayor’s local legislative agenda, city council relations, community affairs as well as key liaison to the Latino community. Sanchez Cornejo is a graduate of the University of Southern California, with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a master’s degree in Public Administration.

 

Monica Azzali Bello, Global Director GBS People Services, General Motors

Monica Azzali Bello is General Motors’ global director GBS People Services. In this role, she manages a large global team that provides human resources and people services to GM employees from GBS HQ in Detroit. Her team’s global responsibilities include Payroll and Timekeeping, Compensation, Benefits and Rewards, Talent, Shared Service Centers, and User Experience, encompassing hire-to-exit processes. Prior to her current role, she served as Human Resources General Director, and Quality General Director for GM South America based out of São Paulo, Brazil, covering Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela, being part of GMB Executive Committee, and GMSA Board of Directors. She has also held several leadership positions across GM in engineering, manufacturing, and quality over 17 years. She has a passion for improving employee experience, and business processes through service quality and reducing complexity. A 27-year veteran of General Motors, she previously held an additional international management responsibility in quality in Europe. She is a graduate of the Escola de Engenharia Mauá with a degree in electrical and electronic engineering. She holds a master’s degree in business administration from Fundação Getúlio Vargas. She completed Stanford University’s Transformation Leadership Development program in 2017, and the University of Michigan – Ross’ Effective Leadership in 2019, both sponsored by GM. Originally from São Paulo, her native language is Portuguese, but she is also fluent in English and Spanish, and conversational in German.

 

Sandra E. Lopez, Vice President, Intel Sports and Media

Sandra E. Lopez is VP for Intel Sports and Media responsible for partnering with the sports and media industry to provide future fans and consumers with the next generation of immersive media experiences. Her team is focused on leading the business, marketing, and market development efforts of Intel Sports and Intel Studios. Lopez is also the co-chair of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on VR/AR/XR. Previously, she led and managed the Fashion wearable business in Intel’s New Technology Group. Earlier in her Intel career, Lopez held various roles within corporate marketing, including director of new business marketing and director of consumer marketing. In the latter role, she led Intel’s brand repositioning work to earn an Intel Achievement Award in 2010. She also earned industry honors. In 2019, she was named Top Women in Media and HITEC 100: The Most Influential and Notable Hispanic Professionals in IT. In 2018, she was named Most Powerful Women in Technology, Most Influential and Notable Hispanic Professional in Tech and Sports Business Journal Game Changer. In 2015, she was named among the Top 10 Latina Executives by LATINA Style, Inc. Before joining Intel in 2005, Lopez worked at Adobe Systems Inc., Macromedia, Computer Associates International Inc. and several other technology companies. Lopez holds a bachelor of science degree in economics and textiles and clothing from the University of California at Davis. In addition, she attended the Stanford Intel Accelerator Program. As part of contributing to the community, she is focused on building the next generation of women leaders.

 

Janis Bowdler, President, JPMorgan Chase & Co. Foundation

Janis Bowdler is the President of the JPMorgan Chase & Co. Foundation, a global leader dedicated to driving inclusive economic growth in communities worldwide. Bowdler has spent the last two decades advancing economic opportunity for families at risk of being left out of growing global prosperity. She began her career in her native Northeast Ohio, rejuvenating Cleveland’s east side neighborhoods. Her passion for helping families move up the economic ladder took her to Washington, D.C. where she spent 10 years advocating on behalf of Latino families at UnidosUS (formerly National Council of La Raza). Compelled by the opportunity to advance a vision for widely shared economic prosperity through the scale of a global financial institution, Bowdler joined JPMorgan Chase in 2013 to help the firm develop a new approach to corporate giving that would increase its impact. Today she is responsible for driving the firm’s commitment to invest $1.75 billion to drive inclusive economic growth around the globe. Under her leadership, the firm launched several of its most high-profile initiatives, including the firm’s $200 million commitment to the City of Detroit’s economic revitalization. Bowdler has authored a number of publications on economic opportunity. Most recently she co-authored Building Equitable Cities: How to Drive Economic Mobility and Regional Growth with Henry Cisneros and Jeff Lubell. She also serves on the boards of Raza Development Fund and low-Income Investment Fund. She is a yoga teacher and mom to one daughter and two rescued pit bulls. She lives with her husband and family in Takoma Park, MD.

 

Rosanna Durruthy, Vice President, Global Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging, LinkedIn

Rosanna Durruthy is LinkedIn’s Vice President of global diversity, inclusion and belonging. She brings broad, cross-functional, human resources leadership experience in attracting and developing high performing talent as the diversity leader at companies like Cigna, Vivendi Universal (Seagram) and Merrill Lynch. At LinkedIn, her focus is on empowering all employees, members and customers to realize their full potential. With Durruthy’s leadership, LinkedIn aims to continue to build on the strong culture that values diversity, inclusion and creating a sense of belonging, for all of their employees. In addition to her role at LinkedIn, Durruthy is an angel investor and advisor to startups that include Viridis Learning, Encantos Media, and Strive. She is also a former member of the HRC Business Advisory Council and served on the Board of Lambda Legal. She has been recognized as one of the country’s leading professional Hispanic women and an influential mind in the diversity and inclusion space.

 

 

 

Evangelina Galvan Shreeve, Director, STEM Education

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

Evangelina Galvan Shreeve is the Director of STEM Education at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), one of 17 U.S. Department of Energy national laboratories. PNNL draws on capabilities from many disciplines—like chemistry, Earth sciences, and data analytics—to advance scientific discovery and develop solutions to the nation’s toughest challenges in energy, environment, and national security. PNNL’s Office of STEM Education inspires and prepares the nation’s next generation of STEM workers. Shreeve and her team provide opportunities for students, educators, and the community to explore and engage in career-focused and hands-on STEM learning experiences aligned to PNNL’s signature science areas. They also focus on key approaches to accelerate STEM progress and capitalize on the unique capabilities and experiences available at PNNL. Their work directly aligns with the U.S. Department of Energy’s mission, which aims to support a diverse workforce that is well-prepared and able to meet the growing demand for STEM skills across the nation. A passionate, results-driven manager with over 25 years of experience in policy and public administration for K-20 education, STEM education initiatives, strategy development and execution, and relationship building, Shreeve is a visionary leader. She is skilled in navigating and influencing policy, developing educational programs, identifying and procuring resources, and managing programs and personnel. Shreeve has served as a board member for numerous federal, state, and local programs and organizations, building an impressive network of STEM champions and collaborators in workforce development, higher education, government, and at research institutions nationwide.

 

Flower Cantu-Kelley, Director, HR Planning & Staff Operations/ERGS Leader, Sprint

Flower Cantu-Kelley is the Director of Planning and Staff Operations for the office of the Chief Human Resources Officer at Sprint. She is responsible for leading financial management for the HR organization, supporting transformation efforts and planning/operations. Her responsibilities include accountability for key operational leadership team support, financial management, performance measurement processes, coordination of operational objectives, work plans, timelines and leading strategic projects involving cross-functional teams. She is leading the Diversity and Inclusion efforts for the seven Employee Resource Groups at Sprint. She is responsible for driving membership engagement, the professional development of the ERG officers, executing on business objectives, and community outreach/partnerships. Her 21 years at Sprint include leading transformation efforts in the Customer Management organization, directly supporting several executives in the Human Resources, Customer Care, IT and Prepaid (Care) organizations, and call center operations. Before her transition to Customer Care, she led a team of 38 business analysts in the Finance organization where she helped Sprint drive significant financial savings as part of her reporting and analytics role. She served as President of the Enlace Employee Resource Group for more than four years (2012-2016). In 2014, Enlace was selected as one of the top five ERGs by United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and participated in the ERG Summit & Corporate Challenge. During her tenure, Enlace also received Honorable Mention by LATINA Style, Inc. Cantu-Kelley currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City and on the Advisory Board for the Mid-America Asian Culture Association (MAACA).

 

Marilu Galvez, Vice President, Community Relations & Development, ABC7/WABC Committee Lead, Diversity & Inclusion Initiatives, ABC Owned Television Group/ Walt Disney Television

 

Marilu Galvez is vice president, Community Relations and Development for WABC-TV – the No. 1 station on-air and online in the New York DMA and the nation for 13 years. In this role, Galvez is responsible for developing new community outreach efforts while growing existing partnerships with organizations to expand WABC’s ties with the varied and diverse communities across the tri-state area. She also develops and executes multiplatform campaigns designed to support station initiatives that serve viewers. Galvez aligns news, programming, marketing operations, as well as station talent, with key cause-related events and campaigns important to the community. She also leverages opportunities to develop advertiser support for these outreach efforts. Previously, Galvez served as WABC’s managing editor since 2014, overseeing editorial content of the station’s multiplatform assets across linear television on Channel 7, ABC7NY.com and the ABC7NY app. Prior to that, she served as assignment editor for Eyewitness News, joining the team in 2001. Cuban-American Galvez has always been an advocate for community efforts and outreach. She is an active member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), a supporter of the Boys & Girls Club and Sade Baderinwa’s Get Reel Foundation as well as all Disney VoluntEars program initiatives. Galvez started her career as a production assistant and assignment editor at Telemundo in 1998. She then became part of the Fox-5 News team as assignment editor in 1999 and spent two years at WNBC-TV before joining WABC-TV.

 

Yaneth Medina, Senior Vice President of Retail Banking and Head of Retail for St Charles Bank & Trust and Schaumburg Bank & Trust, Wintrust Community Banks

Yaneth Medina serves as a Senior Vice President of Retail Banking and Head of Retail for St Charles Bank & Trust and Schaumburg Bank & Trust, Wintrust Community Banks. Medina has more than 20 years of experience in retail banking, relationship building, workplace culture, and coaching and mentoring. She wears many hats and serves on many internal committees, including business development, compliance, and employee recognition. Medina also dedicates her time to serving several organizations in the local area. Currently, she is the Vice President/Board Member for Centro De Informacion. Centro is a non-for-profit agency whose mission is to empower Hispanics with the ability to effectively integrate into our greater community through the facilitation of information, education, citizenship, and well-being. Additionally, she serves as Vice-Chair/Board Member for the Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce. Medina’s strong work ethic and integrity have helped her achieve in her career. She is also viewed by colleagues as a supportive member of the management team and she understands the value of promoting and inspiring a positive culture in which everyone can thrive.
